The secrets of successful negotiation

Law firm of tomorrow imageWebinar – 19 September 2024 (9.30-10.30am)

Many of the best negotiators in the world are lawyers. Practising law is, in many ways, one long series of negotiations. But just because you are an expert in your area of law does not mean that you are a good negotiator. This webinar will open your eyes to what is possible and how to go about negotiating successfully.

For this session, we envisage that the questions might include:

  • What are the common negotiation situations for a partner in a law firm?
  • Which deals/issues are worth focusing on?
  • How do you work out the other side's needs?
  • What does a negotiating strategy look like?
  • How do you control the negotiation?
  • How do you build "room to move" into your offers?
  • What are the main tips on pricing negotiations?
  • How do you approach settlement negotiations in litigation and costs' disputes?
  • What techniques do successful mediators use?
  • How do you close a negotiation?

A panel will take questions from the host and the attendees. Surveys and live polls will ensure that the speakers cover the aspects that the attendees deem most important.

The webinar will provide clear steps towards improving the confidence and success of your own negotiations.

Host and panel

Our panel includes Jim Thomas, a business performance coach and founder of the PDW Group.

Jim will be joined by Richard Allen, a senior consultant with legal pricing and costs consultants Burcher Jennings and the legal pricing consultancy Validatum.

The panel is completed by Andrew Hampel, an ex-Freshfields solicitor who managed many world-famous sportsmen for the sports management company IMG before running its European operation and then running his own global stadium finance company.

The webinar's host is Andy Poole, a partner at accountants Armstrong Watson.
