An effective board for your law firm

Law firm of tomorrow image

Webinar – 13 March 2024 (9.30-10.30am)

Whether you call it a board, or a leadership team, or an executive team, or simply a partners' meeting, all firms need a leadership structure and a process for making strategic decisions and driving the firm forwards.

And ideally that board will have at least one or two outsiders on it, to add to the skills and experience of the in-house team.

For this session, we envisage that the questions might include:

  • What qualities do you need in a chairperson?
  • What is the ideal make-up of a board for different-sized law firms?
  • Who creates the firm's strategy?
  • What does a good strategy look like?
  • What is the Entrepreneur Operating System?
  • What are the typical causes of a dysfunctional board?
  • What are the typical profiles of non-executives who contribute well to law firms?
  • What does a good board agenda look like?
  • What are the most useful metrics for a law firm board to review?
  • How do you get honest input from the rest of the firm, and from clients?
  • How do you focus on the future, rather than the past?

A panel will take questions from the host and the attendees. Surveys and live polls will ensure that the speakers cover the aspects that the attendees deem most important.

This webinar will provide insights and tips that you can immediately put into practice in your own firm.

Host and panel

Our panel includes Carl Newton of Myerson, who became managing partner (then CEO) in 2005. He introduced EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System), and this September the firm became a 100% employee-owned EOT.

Carl will be joined by Alexandra Hatchman, whose varied career includes having been CEO of both Fletchers Solicitors and Napthens. She is now a NED on three boards and works with PE houses on M&A in the legal sector.

The panel is completed by Patrick Dunne, an experienced Chair and former member of 3i's operating committee who has helped boards around the world to improve their effectiveness. Also author of the award winning book "Boards".

As usual, the webinar's host is Andy Poole, a legal sector partner at accountants Armstrong Watson.
